When preparing your submission, please use the ‘ACM SIGCHI Conference Publications Format’, which is available online at www.sigchi.org/chipubform. Documents have to be submitted as Microsoft Word compatible. Contributions can be practical or conceptual, with or without prototypes.
Please send submissions to submissions@chi-sparks.nl and state the format in the subject header between square brackets, for example [Full paper] or [Poster].
All proposal submissions will undergo a blind peer review. Authors are requested to submit an anonymous and non-anonymous version. In this case, anonymous means that as well as the name, any other information that might reveal the organization or project has been omitted.
Accepted papers and other contributions will be published in the conference proceedings and on the website. Additionally, we intend to publish selected best papers in a special issue of a relevant, to be decided, journal. Only English written papers will be selected for publication.
Points to consider before submitting
If you prefer to submit an abstract to be reviewed by the program committee before sending in a complete proposal, you can do so until 25 March 2011. Please indicate this clearly in the subject header and body of your e-mail when you send your abstract to submissions@chi-sparks.nl; e.g. use [abstract for review] in your subject header.
Papers and posters are different forms of presentation but should be of an equally high quality. Both papers and posters will be submitted to the same reviewing process. The choice between the two modes of presentation should depend on the most effective and informative way of communicating the scientific content of the proposal.
The program committee reserves the right to place accepted proposals for full papers, short papers, industry cases, education cases and posters in either category.
Sessions consists of a group of topically-matched submissions, with each submission presented in a short time span (typical 15-20 minutes: 10-15 minutes slide presentation, plus 5 minutes for questions from the audience). The (decided) time limit will be strictly adhered to, in order to allow movement between sessions.
Full papers
8-10 pages of completed research and/or projects
Full papers must report original work, which has not been previously published. Both the paper and its abstract should state clearly its contribution to HCI. Ideally, a paper makes one clear, significant contribution rather than several lesser contributions. The paper must identify and cite published work relevant to the topic. It should explain how the presented work has built on previous contributions, and should indicate where, how and why novel approaches have been adopted.
Papers should emphasize their contribution to HCI concepts and theories, design, and the interaction between humans and technology. Empirical studies in particular should emphasize their relevance to possible applications.
In consultation with the program committee accepted papers can be published – before or after the conference – in journals.
Short papers
2-4 pages of work-in-progress
Short papers must report original work, which has not been previously published. Both the paper and its abstract should state clearly its contribution to HCI. Ideally, a paper makes one clear, significant contribution rather than several lesser contributions. We invite short papers of ongoing work and work in progress, as well as late-breaking and preliminary results.
Industry cases
2-4 pages with a focus on application in industry
Industry cases are similar to short papers / posters, but they are more focused on practical applications than on research. However, industry cases must identify and cite published work relevant to the topic wherever possible. It should also indicate where, how and why novel approaches have been adopted. We invite industry cases of ongoing work and work in progress, as well as late-breaking and preliminary results.
Education cases
2-4 pages with a focus on application in education
Education cases are similar to short papers / posters, but they are more focused on educational applications than on research. However, industry cases must identify and cite published work relevant to the topic wherever possible. They should also, wherever possible, present achieved results and reflective opinions about the process.
Posters
1-4 pages + poster of work-in-progress and/or experimental approaches and results
There are opportunities for exhibiting posters during the conference. Posters will be on display throughout the conference and there will also be scheduled sessions when authors will stand by their posters to discuss them. Poster presenters have the opportunity to exchange ideas one-to-one with attendees and to discuss their work in detail. Each presenter will be provided with board space and will be assigned to specifically designed poster sessions and areas. Presenters may also provide handouts with examples or more detailed information.
All posters should be in portrait format, and should not be larger than A0 (841 × 1189 mm). You can attach your poster to the poster board with pushpins or clean removable tape. Posters must be submitted in Microsoft Word compatible, PDF or PNG file format.
Demonstrations or interactive installations
1-4 pages + demonstration or interactive installations
Demonstrations or interactive installations show (early) implementations of novel, interesting, and important human technology concepts or systems. Demonstrations and installations should be short, so they can be shown repeatedly. We particularly encourage demonstrations and installations with which attendees can interact.
A demonstration or installation submission consists of: 1) a paper that should be no more than four pages, 2) a video which should be at most three minutes long and 20MB in size, and 3) a supplement document with a list of a) technical requirements including electrical and connectivity needs and b) space requirements including display and footprint needs.
All demonstrations and installations will, by default, be assigned a table and chair in a common area. Please include a minimal setup so that we know the range of requirements that we will need to accommodate. Successful demonstration or installation submissions will be contacted by the chair to confirm the availability of requested resources. Both the abstract, digital video and supplement should be submitted electronically.
Side events
such as tutorials, workshops, user meetings, video’s, showcases or a job market
Beside all forms of submissions stated before, there are opportunities for side events such as tutorials, workshops, user meetings, video’s, showcases or a job market. In any of such a case please contact the program committee at side-events@chi-sparks.nl. Describe clearly what kind of side event you propose and how you want to achieve this side event.
